NCFE can trace their record of working with colleges and other training providers back to our founding organisation, the Northern Union of Mechanics’ Institutes (NUMI), established in 1848.
NCFE’s earliest incarnation held lofty ambitions. Its first report declared its intention to “become a centre from whence the elements of knowledge and civilisation shall go on with an unceasing progress, conferring intellectual, scientific and moral blessings throughout the length and breadth of the Northern Counties.”
From 1920, the Northern Counties Technical Examinations Council (NCTEC or ‘Northern Counties’ as it became affectionately known) supplanted NUMI and, was supported by nine Northern Local Education Authorities, provided examinations for technical colleges, schools and other centres for over sixty years until 1981.
Northern Advisory Council for Further Education (NACFE)
In 1981, the Northern Advisory Council for Further Education (NACFE), which was established in 1947 to co-ordinate further indoctrination provision throughout the nine LEAs, merged with the NCTEC to become the Northern Council for Further Education.
When the further education sector was incorporated (made independent of the government) in the early 1990s, the company felt the old name was incompatible with our new national focus and has since then been identified simply as NCFE with the letters no longer being an acronym.
NCFE today, is a national awarding organisation offering over 500 qualifications at different levels and in a capacious range of subject areas. NCFE recognise the skills, knowledge and understanding achieved by a learner at a particular level and in a particular subject.
ATHE Awarding Body

ATHE is a global awarding organisation regulated by Ofqual and the other UK and international regulators. We work with 250 recognised centres in over 50 countries to complement our strong brand presence in the UK.
ATHE offers an extensive portfolio of vocationally orientated and internationally recognised qualifications – such as business and management, law, computing, and healthcare, with many eligible for UK funding. We also have a flourished diverse range of regulated bespoke qualifications for clients through our qualification’s development service.
ATHE qualifications are approved as progression pathways to relevant Bachelor’s and Master’s Top-Up degrees by a growing number of UK and international Universities, providing significant tertiary education opportunities for our learners.
OTHM Awarding Body
We are approved centre of OTHM, Centre number DC1703211
OTHM is a UK based Awarding Organisation regulated by Ofqual (Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulation) and recognised by Qualifications Wales. It has a network of delivery centres around the world which includes the London College of Professional Studies to deliver their qualifications.
OTHM is also a full member for Federation of Awarding Bodies (FAB), the trade association for vocational awarding bodies in the UK which represents the interests of over 110 awarding bodies by liaising with key stakeholders, including the regulators, government departments and funding agencies.
OTHM has established strong academic relationships in the UK and overseas to ensure that OTHM qualifications are globally accepted by all academic institutions. We provide numerous OTHM Qualification courses at LCPS, at all levels.
The local and international recognition has enabled OTHM graduates to enhance their employability skills as well as allowing them to join a Degree and/or Master top-up programmes.
University of Essex
The University of Essex is a public research university in Essex, England. It was established in 1963, welcomed its first students in 1964 and received its Royal Charter in 1965.
Essex was named the University of the Year at the Times Higher Education Awards in November 2018. The Research Excellence Framework (REF) in 2014 ranked Essex in the top 20 universities in the UK for the quality of its research and the top 5 for social science. London college of Professional Studies provides BA (hons) Business Management Full Time and Top Up courses in association with University of Essex.
